Dreadnought class: Britain’s next strategic nuclear submarine

PWR3 reactor, twelve missile tubes, pumpjet propulsion and the industrial burden of continuous deterrence

The Dreadnought class is intended to assume Britain’s continuous at-sea nuclear deterrent in the early 2030s. Four boats will replace Vanguard. The Royal Navy lists 153.6 metres in length, 17,200 tonnes submerged, a crew around 130 and twelve missile tubes. A further major funding phase announced in 2026 marks the shift into critical delivery work.

Propulsion and discretion

Rolls-Royce’s PWR3 reactor drives a pumpjet, while X-form rudders support manoeuvrability and redundancy. The Navy states more than 20 knots but withholds top speed, depth and signature. Reactor life, machinery isolation and quiet auxiliaries matter more to deterrence than brochure speed.

Missiles and torpedoes

Twelve tubes form part of the Common Missile Compartment for Trident II D5 missiles in cooperation with the United States. Four 533 mm tubes provide self-defence with heavyweight torpedoes. Actual patrol load and warhead numbers follow policy and are not the same as maximum tube capacity.

Construction and national infrastructure

BAE Systems builds at Barrow and Rolls-Royce supplies the reactor, with thousands of firms involved. Scale and security make delay expensive. Yard, crews, nuclear regulation, weapon facilities and bases must remain synchronised for decades.

Dreadnought is not an ordinary procurement but the physical foundation of British nuclear policy. Its value cannot be judged responsibly through guessed secret speeds. Undetected patrols, secure command, available boats and an industrial rhythm that replaces Vanguard without a gap are the relevant measures.
