Australia selected Japan’s upgraded Mogami as its general-purpose frigate and signed initial contracts in 2026. Platform and range

Official figures include approximately 6,200 tonnes and up to 10,000 nautical miles of range. Reduced signatures and a highly automated bridge build on the original Mogami concept. Top speed, detailed sonar performance and acoustic signatures are not fully public.

Weapons and air defence

Thirty-two VLS cells provide the key capacity increase. Surface-to-air and other missiles are envisaged alongside anti-ship weapons, a main gun, close defence and torpedoes. Australia’s final mix depends on integration and ammunition purchases. Cell count is capacity, not a guaranteed loadout.

Sensors and helicopter

The frigate must combine air, surface and undersea awareness and operate an MH-60R. Radar, sonar and combat management must work with Australian and US-led networks. Interface translation and regulatory changes are confirmed; major design changes are to be avoided in order to preserve schedule.

Japan first, Australia thereafter

Building the first three hulls in Japan reduces schedule risk and uses an active yard. Australia is then expected to assume construction and support. That transition is demanding: drawings, quality systems, supply chains and skills must transfer without interrupting production flow.
