KSS-III Batch II: South Korea’s larger submarine adopts lithium-ion batteries

Propulsion, signature, vertical launch and the shift from national deterrence toward an exportable design

KSS-III Batch II is the improved second production group of South Korea’s indigenous large submarine. DAPA confirms upgrades to combat system, sonar and noise reduction, plus lithium-ion batteries with a dedicated safety architecture. The second boat is planned for completion in 2026 and delivery in 2028. Many weapons and signature details remain protected.

Energy as a performance driver

Lithium-ion batteries offer more usable energy and faster charging than traditional lead-acid sets, improving submerged endurance and flexible high-power operation. They also demand cell monitoring, cooling, fire suppression and isolation. The officially emphasised safety system is therefore a prerequisite, not a footnote.

Sensors and discretion

Batch II is intended to improve sonar processing, combat management and acoustic signature. No authoritative public detection ranges or noise figures exist. Size alone does not determine stealth; machinery mounts, pumps, propulsor, coatings and operating discipline interact.

Weapons and strategic role

KSS-III is designed for torpedoes, mines and vertically launched South Korean missiles. Exact weapon numbers, ranges and rules remain partly undisclosed. VLS extends conventional land-attack and deterrent options, but it does not make the class a nuclear-armed ballistic-missile submarine.
