The first operational uncrewed carrier tanker is designed to release range – and become the pathfinder for a new carrier air wing
The MQ-25A Stingray was not designed to be a theatrical combat drone. Its task is quieter and potentially more strategic: carry fuel from an aircraft carrier to where the carrier air wing needs it. Fewer F/A-18E/Fs must then serve as improvised tankers, fighters can return to their primary missions and the carrier’s effective reach grows. After the first Navy aircraft flew in April 2026, the programme received Milestone C in May and authority to enter low-rate initial production.

Why a tanker becomes the critical uncrewed aircraft
US carriers use Super Hornets fitted for buddy refuelling. The method works but consumes aircraft, flight hours and fatigue life. MQ-25A moves this routine burden to an uncrewed type. The Navy requires organic mission and recovery tanking: fuel for long-range sorties and reserves for aircraft delayed during landing. Stingray therefore changes not only a range number but the composition, availability and daily workload of the entire air wing.
Airframe, engine and confirmed dimensions
Boeing lists a length of 51 feet, a spread wingspan of 75 feet and a folded width of 31.3 feet. One Rolls-Royce AE 3007N powers the aircraft. Folding wings permit storage in a crowded carrier hangar, while a hose-and-drogue refuelling store serves Navy receiver aircraft. Public figures for internal fuel, speed, radar signature and combat radius remain limited. The familiar requirement to deliver 15,000 pounds of fuel at 500 nautical miles is a programme benchmark, not a universal guarantee for every mission profile.
MQ-25A is designed to taxi, launch, fly a pre-planned mission and recover without a pilot aboard. Air vehicle operators supervise it through the Unmanned Carrier Aviation Mission Control System. Autonomy reduces continuous stick-and-throttle input; it does not remove command authority, mission planning or airspace rules. Stingray’s current baseline is a tanker with secondary ISR potential, not an autonomous weapon carrier. No combat armament is part of the confirmed core mission.
Operating from the world’s hardest airfield
A carrier combines short deck distances, catapult launch, arrested recovery, wind, ship movement and dense traffic. During the 2021 demonstration aboard USS George H.W. Bush, T1 taxied, positioned at the catapult and cleared the landing area. Deck operators used a handheld Deck Control Device while responding to yellow-shirt directors. In flight, JPALS precision approach, the mission-control station and secure data links connect the uncrewed aircraft to the ship.
T1 first flew in 2019 and in 2021 refuelled an F/A-18E/F, E-2D and F-35C. Those events proved the concept but did not use the complete production configuration. The first Navy aircraft performed autonomous taxi tests in January 2026 and flew in April. Milestone C in May opened low-rate production. The announced first lot contains three aircraft, with priced options for three in Lot 2 and five in Lot 3. Production approval is not the same as full operational capability.
Control stations, data and carrier modifications
MQ-25 is a system composed of aircraft, control segment and carrier modifications. The MD-5 or UMCS station sits in the carrier’s Unmanned Aviation Warfare Center and links mission planning, monitoring, data links and deck operations. For the fleet, this unseen infrastructure is as important as the air vehicle. Secure networks, software certification, cyber resilience and modifications across multiple carriers will shape both schedule and cost.
Operational gain and its limits
Stingray adds value twice: it delivers fuel forward and returns Super Hornets to combat assignments. It may also provide a communications node and limited ISR. Yet a large tanker remains valuable and vulnerable, and it depends on communications, weather and the deck cycle. Planners must balance offload, reserve fuel, threat exposure and the number of available vehicles. No single headline range figure captures that equation.
