The strategic requirement

Australia must monitor vast sea approaches, ports, cables and Indo-Pacific chokepoints. Crewed submarines are powerful but expensive and scarce. A persistent autonomous vehicle can pre-position sensors or other payloads, complicate an adversary’s planning and complement crewed forces. It does not remove the need for command, maintenance, legal authorisation or human judgement.

From prototype to programme

DSTG, the Royal Australian Navy and Anduril launched an A$140 million plan for three prototypes in three years. The first Ghost Shark appeared in April 2024. In September 2025 the government announced a A$1.7 billion programme of record, with the first production standard beginning in 2026. Rapid digital design and iterative sea trials shorten development, but do not prove every operational problem is solved.

What autonomy means

Autonomy does not mean political freedom to choose a mission. Independent navigation, mission management and response to the environment are credible requirements, while rules for human control, identification and weapon release are not public. Underwater communications are constrained, so the vehicle must sometimes operate without continuous control. Reliable software, abort logic and recovery are therefore central.

ISR and strike

The Australian government explicitly names intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and strike at very long ranges. Strike is thus a confirmed mission category, not proof of a particular weapon. Modular sensors, communications, deception, mine-related or other payloads are conceivable, but none should be presented as fielded without evidence.

The missing specifications

No authoritative public data sets out dimensions, displacement, depth, propulsion, energy storage, speed, range or endurance. The production shape may also differ from prototypes. Claims of thousands of nautical miles or months at sea remain speculation unless Canberra publishes them. What is confirmed is the extra-large, long-range classification.

Deployment and recovery

Defence Minister Richard Marles said in 2025 that Ghost Shark could be launched from ships or containers around Australia. That suggests flexible logistics rather than dependence on one submarine base. Recovery, battery servicing, payload change, data handling and turnaround are equally important. A large fleet requires depots, transport, spares and trained teams.

Sovereign production

Anduril opened a 7,400-square-metre Sydney factory in October 2025 and reported its first factory-built vehicle ready for sea acceptance testing. The plant is expected to move from low-rate to full production during 2026. More than 40 Australian companies and over 150 direct jobs are cited. Scaling software, electronics and supply remains a risk.

MASU and AUKUS

The Navy named its Maritime Autonomous Systems Unit in April 2026. Under Project SEA 1200 it is tasked with doctrine, experimentation, testing, training and operations for systems including Ghost Shark. The effort supports AUKUS Pillar Two cooperation, but Ghost Shark is still described as an Australian sovereign design and manufacturing programme.

Not the same as Dive-XL

Anduril draws on its Dive family and sells Dive-XL into US programmes. Ghost Shark is the Australian military programme with its own customer, supply chain and classified payloads. Public data for the US vehicle should not be copied across as if it were a Ghost Shark specification.

Operational risks

An uncrewed loss does not cost a crew, but may expose sensitive technology. GPS-denied navigation, underwater communications, collision avoidance, cyber resilience, energy and positive identification are difficult. Anti-submarine search, nets, mines or deception may interfere. Advantage comes from numbers, modularity, dispersion and replacement capacity, not stealth alone.

Assessment

Ghost Shark could affect undersea warfare as large drones affected air power: not by replacing every crewed platform but by adding mass, persistence and distributed risk. Australia’s A$1.7 billion decision moves it beyond the laboratory. Sea-test reliability, production rate and the still-secret payload will matter more than its futuristic outline.
