BARAK MX: Israel’s modular air-defence network for land and sea

Four range classes, active seekers, open battle management and the reality of layered defence

BARAK MX is not one missile but an open air-defence architecture for land and naval forces. IAI combines sensors, battle management, launchers and interceptors of different reach. Official figures list 15 kilometres for BARAK SR, 35 for MR, 70 for LR and 150 for ER. All use active radar seekers and share components.

A network of sensors and launchers

The open architecture is intended to connect multiple radars and fire units. One unit can use another’s target data and engage beyond its own sensor. Cooperation increases coverage but requires secure links, precise timing and clear engagement authority. A network failure must not disable the entire battery.

Four interceptors

SR and MR cover point and local defence, while LR and ER extend area and missile defence. Different motors and boosters tailor energy to mission. Published ranges are maximum classes; real engagement zones depend on target altitude, speed, geometry and sensor quality.

Threats and limits

IAI lists aircraft, helicopters, drones, cruise and anti-ship missiles, rockets and selected ballistic threats. No interceptor is equally effective against everything. Saturation, terrain, deception and magazine depth shape outcomes. BARAK MX complements upper and lower tiers rather than replacing every layer.

Editorial assessment

Modularity and a common interceptor family make BARAK MX exportable. Its main advantage is network architecture, not the largest range number. Operational statements confirm real use but do not reveal a complete success rate. Buyers must examine radar integration, missile stocks and sustainable cost.
