L-SAM and L-SAM II: South Korea’s upper tier of air and missile defence

South Korea is building a national upper layer for Korea Air and Missile Defense with L-SAM. DAPA confirmed completion of development and a production plan from 2025 to 2030 worth about 1.73 trillion won. L-SAM II is intended to defend three to four times the area. That is a development objective; exact engagement altitudes and probabilities remain partly undisclosed.

Layers rather than a wonder weapon

L-SAM is designed to engage aircraft and ballistic missiles at long range and high altitude. M-SAM II/Cheongung and Patriot operate below it. Multiple tiers create additional shots and different engagement geometries. No single system can defeat saturation, decoys and every approach on its own.

Sensor, command and interceptors

A multifunction radar detects and tracks, while battle management prioritises threats and assigns interceptors. L-SAM uses different effector logic for aircraft and ballistic targets. Active seekers and datalinks add flexibility; exact radar ranges and kill probabilities are classified.

L-SAM II as the next level

L-SAM II is intended to reach higher and defend a substantially larger area. Development is planned through 2028 with broad Korean industrial participation. It is not yet an available battery; sensor coverage, interceptor maturity and network integration require testing.

Editorial assessment

L-SAM strengthens Korean industrial and operational autonomy but does not replace early warning satellites, Patriot or alliance support. Value lies in the layered network. Production of the first system is a concrete milestone; L-SAM II remains an ambitious development with unresolved performance boundaries.
