How the Polish variant of South Korea’s K2 is taking shape, what the contracts confirm and which technical questions remain open
With K2PL, Poland intends not only to buy tanks but to build national production, maintenance and development capacity. The starting point is South Korea’s K2 Black Panther, adapted with extra armour, an active protection system and counter-drone capability. Contract terms, baseline K2 specifications and the final K2PL standard are three different levels of certainty.
K2PL is not a fully revealed data sheet; it is a contracted industrialisation programme with confirmed protection requirements and still-open design details.

From rapid K2GF deliveries to K2PL
Poland ordered 180 rapidly deliverable K2 tanks in 2022, known locally as K2GF. They fill urgent gaps and establish training, logistics and units. The August 2025 contract adds 180: 116 K2GF and 64 K2PL.
K2PL is the Polish-adapted development. Three early tanks will be built and tested in Korea; 61 are to be produced at Bumar-Łabędy in Gliwice. The programme thus moves from import towards local assembly, maintenance and industrial competence.
What the contract actually binds
The Polish ministry lists delivery windows, tank numbers, support vehicles, training, logistics, ammunition, spares, tools, test equipment and documentation. K2PL deliveries are scheduled for 2028–2030 and 81 support vehicles for 2029–2031.
Those comprise 31 recovery, 25 engineering and 25 bridge-laying vehicles. This matters because armoured forces depend on recovery, repair, obstacle crossing, bridging and ammunition. The contract builds a system, not just a tank fleet.
The baseline K2 platform
Hyundai Rotem lists 56 tonnes, a three-person crew and a 1,500 hp diesel for the South Korean K2. Its main weapon is a 120 mm L/55 smoothbore with an autoloader and 40 rounds, supported by 12.7 mm and 7.62 mm machine guns.
The manufacturer quotes 70 km/h on road, 50 km/h cross-country and about 450 km range. In-arm hydropneumatic suspension can adjust hull attitude. These are baseline values; K2PL armour and equipment may alter weight, mobility and range.
Firepower, sensors and autoloader
The autoloader permits a commander, gunner and driver crew, saving protected volume and maintaining loading rate without a human loader’s fatigue. It also raises dependence on machinery, sensors, software and maintenance.
Hyundai Rotem describes hunter-killer operation, digital fire control, thermal imaging and C4I integration. The final Polish optics, radios, encryption, data standards and ammunition portfolio are not yet fully public.
Protection: confirmed capability, undisclosed detail
Additional armour, active protection and a counter-drone system are officially specified for K2PL. This reflects wars in which tanks face guided missiles, loitering munitions, FPV drones, artillery fragments and persistent surveillance.
The APS supplier, sensor layout, interception arcs, hard- and soft-kill mix, roof protection and counter-UAS effectors remain undisclosed. Module weight and power demand are also unknown. Reporting should therefore describe the required capability without inventing a finished layout.
Mobility in Polish conditions
Poland combines roads, soft terrain, rivers and urban areas. The baseline K2’s suspension and power-to-weight ratio are useful, and Hyundai Rotem quotes deep fording to 4.1 metres.
Extra armour can change mass, ground pressure, acceleration, braking and military bridge class. K2PL must be qualified with Polish rail profiles, bridges, workshops and recovery equipment. Early test vehicles will provide meaningful production figures.
Production in Gliwice and technology transfer
The contract assigns 61 K2PL to Polish production. In April 2026 Hyundai Rotem and Bumar-Łabędy agreed local production and maintenance for K2PL and recovery vehicles. The company also names Polish front and rear cameras and an inertial navigation system.
Localisation is more than final assembly. Drawings, tooling, test stands, quality control, software access, spares rights and trained people determine sovereignty. Poland seeks full maintenance competence, but the exact local share in the engine, gun, electronics and protection package remains open.
360 firm orders versus the number 1,000
The first order for 180 and the second for another 180 make 360 firm tanks. The often-quoted 1,000 figure comes from a wider framework ambition, not a fully funded and scheduled production order.
Future batches may follow, but each requires a new contract, funding and capacity in Polish and Korean supply chains. This distinction is essential for judging cost and force availability.
Logistics, training and NATO integration
A new tank requires ammunition, simulators, technicians, spares and digital interfaces. The package includes training and logistics, but stock levels and availability targets are not public. Operating Leopard 2, Abrams and K2 fleets increases complexity in the near term.
Hyundai Rotem announced AQAP-2110 certification for K2 and associated vehicles in July 2026. That is a manufacturer statement on NATO quality assurance, not proof of the finished Polish configuration. Daily availability remains the test.
Risks and open decisions
The programme must align schedule, protection integration, weight control and local production maturity. APS can interact with sensors, radios and nearby infantry; counter-drone defence needs rapid detection, suitable effectors and workable rules.
Industrial risks include tooling, supplier qualification, permissions, software baselines and Korean key components. Militarily, Poland must integrate several tank types into one command, training and support architecture.
Editorial assessment
K2PL is as much an industrial project as a weapon system. Modern fire control, an autoloader, strong baseline mobility and planned missile/drone protection are attractive, while local production may strengthen supply security.
The benchmark cannot be the baseline K2 brochure. The decisive evidence will be qualified K2PL production figures, depth of technology transfer and the availability of complete units. Only together do they turn a contract into lasting combat capability.
