Saab Nimbrix: a compact short-range counter-drone missile

Active seeker, airburst warhead, swarm defence and the cost problem in modern counter-UAS operations

Saab is developing Nimbrix as a very small ground-launched missile against drones up to NATO Class II. Company data state a length below one metre and range of two to five kilometres. An active seeker and fragmentation airburst warhead are intended to engage groups of small targets. First deliveries were targeted for 2026; broad operational maturity remains to be demonstrated.

Small missile, larger system

After launch, Nimbrix is intended to track with its own seeker. A sensor can therefore support several shots without illuminating each round to impact. The missile still requires external detection, identification and engagement control. Radar, optics and command software remain part of the kill chain.

Airburst against small targets

A proximity fuze can disperse fragments near a drone and reduce the precision needed for a direct hit. The warhead is claimed to threaten multiple closely spaced targets. Actual coverage depends on target spacing, geometry, warhead and fuze logic and must be demonstrated in representative tests.

Range and economics

Two to five kilometres place Nimbrix between guns, electronic attack and larger surface-to-air missiles. Its value depends on cost per shot and magazine depth. An expensive missile against the cheapest one-way drone remains unattractive; Nimbrix needs to sit inside a layered defence.

Editorial assessment

Nimbrix addresses a real gap with a compact fire-and-forget interceptor. Size and active homing are promising, but serial cost, electronic resilience and performance against realistic swarms will decide success. Until field evidence appears, range and delivery dates remain manufacturer statements.
