K239 Chunmoo: South Korea’s multi-calibre rocket artillery and Poland’s Homar-K
Twin launch pods, guided rockets, tactical range and a model for local ammunition production
K239 Chunmoo is not one rocket launcher but a modular fires family. Two interchangeable pods accept different guided and unguided rockets. Poland is fielding an adapted Homar-K configuration and building a national supply chain. Hanwha describes the 239 mm CGR-080 with roughly 80 km range and GPS/INS guidance.
Pods and ammunition mix
Sealed pod exchange reduces reload time and separates ammunition safely from the launcher. Multiple calibres allow area fire, precision engagement and longer-range attack from one vehicle. The advantage appears only when reconnaissance, release and logistics provide the right ammunition at the right time.
Accuracy and range
GPS/INS guidance improves precision over traditional area rockets but remains sensitive to navigation interference and coordinate quality. Manufacturer CEP figures apply under defined conditions. Range varies by munition; one maximum number never describes the whole launcher.
Homar-K and industry
Poland integrates Chunmoo on a Jelcz chassis with national command and communications. Planned rocket production should improve security of supply and export potential. Technology transfer does not automatically mean sovereignty over seekers, motors and software.
Editorial assessment
Chunmoo is attractive because it joins scalability, national adaptation and local production. It cannot replace targeting or ammunition stocks. Comparison with HIMARS must cover launcher numbers, munition mix, reload time, data integration and industrial delivery—not range alone.
Primary sources and method
This assessment uses official government, armed-forces and manufacturer material. Missing data are not replaced with estimates.
