AMCA: India’s stealth-fighter programme moves toward five prototypes and industrial competition
Programme status, signature design, the engine problem and the strategic value of an indigenous fifth-generation aircraft
India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft has moved beyond pure concept at the political level, but it is not yet a flying fighter. In 2025 the government approved an execution model under which the Aeronautical Development Agency will work with a competitively selected Indian industry partner to build five prototypes. That confirms a programme—not the detailed numbers often circulated around it.

Design and mission
AMCA is planned as a twin-engine multirole aircraft with reduced signatures, internal weapon bays and modern sensor fusion. It is intended to combine air superiority, precision strike and networked operations. Exact radar cross-section, range, payload and supercruise performance are not accepted public specifications; renders and show models remain design representations.
The engine as the central risk
Early prototypes are expected to use an available imported engine, while a more powerful later solution is envisaged through international cooperation and growing Indian participation. The distinction matters: a prototype engine can enable flight testing without meeting the thrust, life and maintainability required of a mature production aircraft.
Sensors, weapons and software
Plans include an AESA radar, infrared sensing, electronic warfare and internal air-to-air and air-to-surface weapons. Integration is the hard part. Sensor fusion, thermal management, software assurance and safe weapon separation must be tested together. A list of candidate weapons is not a certified operational configuration.
Industrial competition and schedule
The model allows Indian public and private companies or consortia to compete for prototype work. It aims to broaden capacity and reduce dependence on a single integrator. Selection, detail design, manufacture and flight testing will take years. A first-flight target is not a date for squadron service or dependable serial output.

AMCA matters because India seeks sovereignty over signatures, software and future upgrades. The challenge lies less in the external stealth shape than in propulsion, manufacturing quality and systems integration. Progress should be measured in hardware, test hours and production contracts—not rendered images.
